Dear friends,
This weekend we are discussing Nostalgia.
Maybe there are two distinct issues with this topic. The first is the
idea of longing for something in the past. However, this is not like
missing something or losing something. But rather wanting to experience
afresh or even anew some aspects of the past. By definition usually we
regard these aspects as having a positive feeling on us.
The other issue is the question of memory: how much are we remembering
the past, how much are we filling in missing gaps about the past and how
much are we inventing the past?
For example, I'm nostalgic for the time when I could write a full essay.
Luckily for Miguel however, he does not need to feel nostalgic about his
Maths tertulia because the next meeting is on Tuesday, 22 June, details
below.

Hemos encontrado un sitio nuevo para la Tertulia de Matemáticas: el
Círculo Salmantino, así que el próximo Martes tendremos la esperada
tercera conferencia de Roberto sobre la Conjetura de Poincaré, que sigue
de actualidad por diversos motivos (ver enlaces adjuntos más abajo).
Por otro lado, como muchos sabéis, el gran divulgador de las matemáticas
recreativas Martin Gardner nos dejó hace unos días. Durante muchos años,
desde su columna mensual en la revista Scientific American, Martin
Gardner dio a conocer con estilo ameno y accesible aspectos divertidos y
al mismo tiempo profundos de las Matemáticas. Muchos se lo agradecimos
entonces y se lo agradecemos ahora.

TERTULIA DE MATEMÁTICAS el próximo Martes 22 de Junio -4º del mes- de

1. TEMA
CONJETURA DE POINCARÉ, 3ª parte. Impartida por Roberto Álvarez Chust,
ingeniero de telecomunicación
Tras los múltiples ataques a la conjetura durante casi 100 años, en
2002-2003 Grigory Perelman publicó una solución que la comunidad
matemática califica de impresionante y espectacular. En esta tercera
charla intentaremos ver las principales ideas desarrolladas por Perelman
para demostrar no solo la conjetura de Poincaré sino también la
Conjetura de Geometrización de Thurston.
Al ser el trabajo de Perelman la continuación y conclusión del trabajo
desarrollado por Richard Hamilton, hablaremos también de la idea
fundamental de la demostración: el flujo de Ricci, introducido en 1982
por Hamilton.

2. PROBLEMA
Llas representaciones de los números son tanto más cortas cuanto más
alta sea la base de numeración. Demostrar que el número e es la base de
numeración óptima cuando el criterio consiste en minimizar el producto:
(nº de dígitos de la base) x (nº de dígitos para representar un nº
determinado en esa base)
